Day 1: Goal Setting
Let me ask you some questions:
Do you feel lost in life? (I mean, who doesn’t)
Do you feel unclear on your mission and have no idea what to work on?
Do you have any clue where you’re going or where you want to be in the first place?
I know I felt like this before.
These moments happen A LOT.
You stroll through life with this constant feeling of “directionlessness”
Taking your journey one step at a time, from one day to the next, but without knowing where the hell you’re actually heading towards.
Being kinda productive on day 1.
Similar stuff the next day.
And then on day 3 and onwards..
Slacking off, wasting hours on YouTube and social media, not seeing the sun in days, and eventually feeling like shit.
After that?
You go back to your initial project, or come up with some other task to “work on” (because the first clearly “wasn’t for me”)- only for the cycle to repeat itself.
Why does this happen?
You simply feel lost.
You have no clear future plans.
Some dude might say that lifestyle is “living in the moment”
We know for a fact it’s catastrophic for long-term life enjoyment and short-term focus.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll know that this “ignorant attitude” to life won’t get you anywhere.
It certainly got me nowhere.
You’re not a fan of only “living in the moment” too, are you?
Look, I think YOU are either:
Nowhere right now, and want to go somewhere
Finally somewhere, after you started doing (X)
So enough of the suspense.
Because the solution to your problems is dead simple.
To solve unclarity, directionlessness, and uncertainty?
You Set Yourself Goals
It genuinely surprises me how many people still don’t do this.
But as it turns out?
Many of my clients actually start at this absolute baseline of productivity.
No clear future targets, no clear plan, no clear mission.
Without goals, there is no direction, no point, no “reason why” or thing towards you can progress.
There is no need to be productive (and therefore fulfilled) in the first place.
What you need to understand is this:
Goal setting is step 1.
For literally everything.
The clearer and longer term you think ahead, the better.
Before I confuse you more- let’s just get into the how.
Most people set goals the wrong way (if they set any)
They go:
“In (X) months, I want to be at (Y)!”
(X) in this case (which either some influencer told them about or they thought of 5 minutes ago) seems like a good idea.
Then?
They give up somewhere along the way.
You know the feeling.
Grand Plan + No Results = Ditch The Plan
But after this method?
You won’t anymore.
Because we’re doing this the right way.
We’re starting by setting goals 10 years into the future.
What the hell?
10?
Why?
Simple: In the age of the internet, digital products & services, AI and innovation, you can achieve anything you ever wanted in 10 years.
Maybe.
Theoretically.
And if AI doesn’t become our overlord first.
Of course, you have less clue about where you will be in 10 years than my cat had clues about modern art.
And I’m no different.
But funnily enough, in the case of goal setting it’s incredibly useful to start looking as far ahead into the future as possible.
And then breaking down your goals into smaller steps.
So the key question to ask is this:
What will my life look like in 10 years?
Replace “will” with “is going to”, “do I want it to” or “I imagine”, it doesn’t really matter.
In essence, you’ll paint a picture of your dream life (and include every life area you want)
To give you an idea how mine looks like (not extensive):
I will have an amazing body, physique & health
I will be free financially, in full control of my time and location
I will have a group of amazing, driven and ambitious friends that I’d trust with my life
I will be fulfilling my purpose with meaningful work every single day and improve the life of others along with mine
Aim for the stars as they say.
AND BOOOM!
You’ve created your long-term 10 Year Goals out of thin air.
Also- don’t worry about being specific right here.
As I said, 10 years are absolutely impossible to predict.
But now you have direction.
A bit of clarity.
A cure to the aimless drifting through life.
Crazy to think people don’t do this, right?
Now here’s why you set long-term goals first:
So your short-term goals lead you directly toward YOUR ideal dream life.
Providing a crystal clear roadmap to send uncertainty down the ditch.
To set short-term goals?
You simply break down your long-term goals.
Into shorter long-term:
5 year goals
2 year goals
1 year goals
6 month goals
And very short term:
3 month goals
2 month goals
1 month goals
The shorter the goals get, the more specific you can be (as you can look ahead a lot better)
To make this dead stupid simple, you can use the most common framework for goal setting there is:
S: Specific
M: Measurable
A: Achievable
R: Relevant
T: Time-based
“Relevancy” (toward your long-term vision) & “time-based” are already ticked off through this method.
And that’s all you need.
All the steps it takes to set yourself simple, long and short-term goals.
I just want to warn you:
You might want to change your goals in a few months.
Or even weeks.
It’s ok to take a while to figure out what you want out of life.
To speed up the process?
Ask yourself questions like the following:
Why do I want to achieve this goal? Is it internal or external motivation?
→ the more internally motivated you are, the betterIs this goal authentic to me?
→ do I really want to achieve it, or did my parents, authority figures, society or the internet tell me to? (no deal breaker, but good to ask yourself)Do I think this is essential to my happiness in 10 years?
→ the most important question of all
This seems deep.
It is, and that’s the point (you don’t want to head-storm your way towards goals you actually don’t even want to achieve, right?)
If you haven’t set yourself some long-term goals, now is the time.
Want to go the extra mile (and I’d heavily recommend that)?
Lock yourself in a room and journal about your goals until all your doubts and unclarity vanish.
And because this is so important-
